Why scans turn out gray

The tool estimates the paper tone across the whole page and divides it out, so uneven lighting and shadows flatten to one clean white while strokes stay dark — the same trick scanner apps use, running locally so your documents never leave your device.

How do I make a scanned document background white?

Upload the scan and pick a mode — the paper tone is divided out automatically, so shadows and uneven lighting flatten to white in one pass. For phone photos of documents, shoot flat-on and the result is close to a real scanner.

Will my signature or a red stamp survive the cleanup?

Yes — keep the default color mode and ink other than black stays colored. Only the ink-saving black & white mode discards color, so use it when the document will be printed anyway.

Is the cleaned-up scan good enough for OCR?

Usually better than the original: binarizing with a clean white background raises recognition rates in most OCR apps. If OCR is the goal, pick the black & white mode — gray halftones are what confuse recognizers.
